On my last visit, I ordered the teriyaki special combo. I requested the beef medium rare, but it came very well done. Also, when you need to add salt to a teriyaki dish in a Japanese restaurant because the sauce is so bland that you can barely taste it, you know there are problems.
Sad, because this used to be one of my favourite restaurants in Ottawa. Not any more... there are too many good restaurants to waste anymore time and money on this place.
In any case, the sushi was amazing, as always. If I have to go back, I'll stick to that. That, and the gyoza, which was delicate and fantastic.
I went here recently because it was recommended to us.
I wasn't crazy about it. Sure the ambience is great, but overall I wasn't impressed by the food. I have had much better in Toronto (I'm new here).
Although, I really did like this Japanese take on congee, where they pour tea over the rice and topping of your choice. I think there was dashi in the tea, since it tasted oily and salty when I tried it from the pot. Which is disappointing for a vegan, because dashi is not vegan. So I won't be having it again. :(
As for the fish, my GF and Sister were not impressed.
I'm going to be sampling from the other Sushi restaurants in town before I going back.
Sushi quest... etc etc... you know the drill by now :)
In any case, I stopped by for a quick lunch today - I ordered a salmon skin roll and a spicy tuna roll from the a la carte menu. Both were very good. The tightness of these rolls were a little lacking though, but I was too hungry to care.
What I do like about this place is the atmosphere. It seems very cozy to me, and I will certainly return.
Nanook - re: sushi pizza, if you don't try it at Sushi Kan, try it at Genji! It's awesome!
Every year we would go to Suisha Gardens for our anniversary. The last time was 3 years ago. It had changed so much, the event was disappointing. Our waitress took away our drinks before we finished them, the steak I ordered was not the steak on the menu. I always ordered the most tender steak they had and that last time they told me that all the steaks were the same. I asked, why then, did they have two cuts of beef. We asked to speak with the owner but she said he was gone for the night. It's really sad as it was our favourite place. We have been trying different places now and maybe we'll find something to call our special place again.
Japanese are very loyal and very supportive to their people. So, I am not surprised they go to this place instead of other Jap restaurants.
We went to this place couple years ago.
Do not recommend their Grilled squid. I rememebr that the waitress was very polite to answer our questions in English. But we had a hard time to understand what she was talking.
I haven't been back for a while. Would like to try other places instead.
I'm vegan too. I'm afraid I wasn't impressed at all by the Sushi.
Mers you need to get out more.
Where were the classics for veggies, like tempura Sweet Potato (make sure there is no egg in the batter when you have it) and Avocado - Asparagus, Oyster Mushroom and Avocado - Sticky Fermented Bean Roll or Vegetarian Dragon Roll? Probably because these rolls most likely were developed in the new world.
As a vegan, I appreciate an interesting selection of veggie sushi (asparagus, seaweed, tofu...), but wow, the price! If you want good veggie sushi and don't mind shelling out, this is the place for you.
