Hearing that there's a change in ownership is welcome news to me. I had heard from somebody "in the industry" that the past owners would keep all the tip money for themselves! I cannot verify whether or not this actually happened, though, or if it was just restaurant competitiveness.
My friend told me that New Mee Fung has changed hand. The original owners have sold the business to the existing owners and this may explain the difference.
Huge selection on the menu. Good portions and prices. About average or slightly above average quality. The giant prawn is more like a lobster than a shrimp. My son ordered it once (he loves shrimp) but when it arrived it was not at all what he expected. Chez Nam is across the street.
Quite an extensive menu (600+ items?) and despite LiveToEat's comment about them raising prices, in my opinion it still represents excellent value considering the quality and portion sizes. You'll notice nobody has linked Pho with New Mee Fung, well that's because there are other places in the city that do it better - stick with a vermicelli dish or their rice paper wraps ("Vietnamese Lone Star")
This is our favourite Friday night comfort food place. They bring you a fresh pot of tea as soon as you sit down. There is often a line-up, but it moves quickly. No. 137, spicy stewing beef is our favourite soup and the Rice paper wrap and rolls are great, too. We find that it is one of the best deals in town. If we pay more than $20 for the meal, we can't eat it all.
This was one of the best format viet restaurants in town till they raised their prices. Now I think there are a lot cheaper places that are just as good....
They have few large tables. So you can see different groups of people here. My friend told us that every time they came here for lunch, this place was packed with business people from Hull or downtown offices.
The menu selection is quite extensive. Grilled chicken, beef & pork, plus a good selection of soups, spring rolls, salad and noodles.
I was told their wraps are awesome. Their dry noodle dishes are good with good portion.
I tried their rice vermincelli noodles with shrimps and spring roll (comes with crushed peanuts, chili fish sauce and lettuce). Food is not bad. Next time I will try others.
Spring roll, BBQ beef, and shrimp on sugarcane shown here. Very good but it takes patience to put together. They've improved how they serve the wrappers -- they are individually separated by little disks of plastic mesh.
