Chef Terry Hino's food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. I love his Hino steak, Miso or Teriyaki Salmon and Chicken Karaage.. Considering he just celebrated his 24th Anniversary of his restaurant last September, the man has persevered through good times and bad times and he is still there today. He's a one man shop with a helper or two on occasion; however, the reality is that he is really on his own and strives to satisfy his customers the best he can. Some people have complained about how rude/mean he is, but cut him some slack and give him a chance (try it out a few times -- eat at the bar -- ).. Us regulars know he's a kind man and will treat you well once you get to know him... Looking forward to celebrating his 25th Silver Anniversary this year!
Hinos restaurant on Wellington St (close to Sommerset) has been a favourite of ours for many years. We were there tonight, and had the most enjoyable meal and evening.
We always start our meal with a double order of the Ginger Shrimp cocktail. The Ginger sauce on this dish is to die for. Always served with bread from Rideau bakery, the bread ensures that you can soak up every last bit of the amazing sauce. For the main course, I requested a vegetable and beef stirfry, although it wasn't on the menu tonight. The chef (Terry Hino) is very accomidating, and will try to create any dish you may request. (aside: there is a regular who shows up on Saturday nights and orders French toast...and Terry delivers). My spouse ordered the Steak/Scallop dinner, served with frites and salad...it was excellent as well.
I realize that there has been some not so postive reviews as to the decore of this restaurant, but in my opinion, if you are looking for an non pretencious place to spend an enjoying, not too expensive evening, it's hard to beat this place.
I'm a regular here, as such, I'm treated very well. I'm a big fan of the tempura, steak w/ peppercorn sauce, shiitake stuffed chicken, gyoza, calamari (with any sauce)... it's all about the food... don't go expecting a beautiful white linen, super service restaurant... the prices are very reasonable for Ottawa.
