The Candy Store is also now acting as a vendor for Ottawa Cupcakery (ottawacupcakery.com) who do not yet have a store up and running. They sell their cupcakes each Saturday, and you can order cupcakes through the Candy Store in advance.
Also, Chimichimi, would you not agree that Galler chocolate should be a "food" in and of itself?
One of my new favourite places to go. Reasonably priced true Belgian chocolate, retro candy, and samples of just about anything since the staff are super friendly... you can't go wrong here! I like the variety of malted milk chocolate balls, it's a veritable utopia for those who love the Maltesers/Whoppers. The Galler chocolates are a must buy.
The Candy Store opened in Westboro Village earlier this summer, and while I was very skeptic at first, thinking they'd be a glorified Candy Mountain, they have since won me over.
The decor is wonderfully nostalgic, full of bright pastels and beautiful Victorian furniture. Big, glass candy jars filled the back wall, giving it a very 1920s general store feeling.
You're greeted by friendly staff who immediately offer you a sample of whatever they have just received in, usually some awesome speciality candy or chocolate from Australia, Europe, or Britain. The owners know their stuff and are able to tell you about the different certifications on their chocolate, as well as what makes it different from the stuff you can get here.
What really sold me though, in terms of product, was the Galler chocolates, which have the mark of the Duke of Belgium, and are some of the finest in Europe. They're not overpriced at $4 for a 75g bar (truffle-style, filled with ganache or filling), $1.90 for 25g solid bar.
In all honesty, The Candy Store is not a glorified Sugar Mountain, but is in a class of its own, as the owners and their staff could tell you all you need to know, and more, about your favourite candies, and help introduce you to some new ones.
